Still I Rise: women’s saga

Still I Rise is not merely an exhibition of women artists; it is a women’s saga—a collective voice for identity and existence. Each painting in the exhibition tells a different story, sometimes loudly and sometimes quietly. 

In its third edition, Still I Rise, the annual all-women exhibition by Shailja Art Gallery, continues as a powerful affirmation of resilience, persistence, and creative freedom. What began as a celebration of women’s voices has grown into a meaningful platform—one that showcases artistic excellence while centring lived experiences and layered identities within contemporary practice.

The title draws strength from the iconic poem Still I Rise by Maya Angelou—a timeless anthem of dignity and defiance. Angelou’s words speak of rising despite erasure, marginalisation, and struggle. This exhibition is not about survival alone; it is about standing one’s ground and defining oneself on one’s own terms.

The participating artists—including Yasmin Sultana, Archna Jha, Neena Khare, Monika Sonik, Aasha Radhika, Alka Chadha Harpalani, Alpa Palkhiwala, Amrita Ghosh, Swati Vishvnath Sabale, Anshika Anand, Aparna Anand Singh, Moneka Sonik  and Harsh Inder Loomba, among others—unveil different realities of life through both figurative and abstract expressions.

Through their works, they bring forward fragments of memory, emotion, and lived experience, translating them into visual narratives that resonate across personal and collective spaces. Each artist brings something deeply personal to the exhibition. Some draw inspiration from memories of childhood and home, while others explore themes of identity, mythology, labour, or the everyday realities of womanhood. 

Their materials and styles may differ—ranging from painting and woodwork to mixed media—but what unites them is authenticity. Each work becomes a story, told through colour, texture, and form. Every painting carries its narrative. Some of these stories are familiar—stories we have heard before—while many remain unheard, hidden between layers of colour, gestures, and silence. Together, these works reveal the complexity of women’s experiences: moments of strength, vulnerability, resistance, and hope.

When put together, these practices create a conversation that spans time and space. There is no single narrative, no single way of rising. Yet in every story shared and every canvas displayed, the message remains clear:

We are here. 

We have been here. 

And we rise.

स्टिल आई राइज़ : एक स्त्री गाथा

स्टिल आई राइज़ केवल महिला कलाकारों की एक प्रदर्शनी नहीं है; यह स्त्रियों की एक गाथा है—पहचान और अस्तित्व की सामूहिक आवाज़। इस प्रदर्शनी की प्रत्येक पेंटिंग एक अलग कहानी कहती है—कभी ऊँची आवाज़ में, तो कभी चुपचाप।

अपने तीसरे संस्करण में, स्टिल आई राइज़, शैलजा आर्ट गैलरी, गुरुग्राम द्वारा आयोजित वार्षिक सर्व-महिला प्रदर्शनी, दृढ़ता, निरंतरता और रचनात्मक स्वतंत्रता की एक सशक्त अभिव्यक्ति के रूप में सामने आती है। जो शुरुआत महिलाओं की आवाज़ों के उत्सव के रूप में हुई थी, वह अब एक अर्थपूर्ण मंच में विकसित हो चुकी है—जहाँ समकालीन कला के भीतर निहित जीवनानुभवों और बहुस्तरीय पहचानों को केंद्र में रखते हुए कलात्मक उत्कृष्टता को प्रस्तुत किया जाता है।

इस प्रदर्शनी का शीर्षक माया एंजेलो (Maya Angelou) की प्रसिद्ध कविता Still I Rise से प्रेरित है, जो- स्त्री गरिमा और प्रतिरोध का एक कालजयी गीत। एंजेलो के शब्द उस साहस की बात करते हैं जो स्त्रियों को मिटाए जाने, हाशिये पर धकेले जाने और संघर्षों के बावजूद फिर से उठ खड़े होने की प्रेरणा देता है। यह प्रदर्शनी केवल जीवित रहने की कहानी नहीं है; यह अपने स्थान पर दृढ़ता से खड़े होने और स्वयं को अपनी शर्तों पर परिभाषित करने की घोषणा है।

इस प्रदर्शनी में भाग लेने वाली कलाकारों—अर्चना झा, यास्मिन सुल्ताना, नीना खरे, मोनिका सोनिक, आशा राधिका, अलका चड्ढा हरपलानी, अल्पा पालखिवाला, अमृता घोष, स्वाति विश्वनाथ सबले, अंशिका आनंद, अपर्णा आनंद सिंह, हर्ष लोम्बा, सहित अन्य ने—अपने चित्रों के माध्यम से जीवन की विभिन्न सच्चाइयों को उजागर किया है। उनके कार्यों में कभी मूर्त तो कभी अमूर्त अभिव्यक्तियाँ दिखाई देती हैं। इन कलाकृतियों के माध्यम से वे स्मृतियों, भावनाओं और जीवन के अनुभवों के अंशों को सामने लाती हैं, जो व्यक्तिगत और सामूहिक दोनों स्तरों पर गूँजते हैं।

प्रत्येक कलाकार इस प्रदर्शनी में कुछ अत्यंत निजी और आत्मीय लेकर आयी है। कुछ कलाकार बचपन और घर की स्मृतियों से प्रेरणा लेती हैं, तो कुछ पहचान, मिथक, श्रम और स्त्री जीवन की रोज़मर्रा की वास्तविकताओं को अपने कार्यों में तलाशती हैं। उनकी सामग्री और शैली भिन्न हो सकती है—पेंटिंग और लकड़ी के कार्य से लेकर मिश्रित माध्यम तक—लेकिन जो उन्हें एक सूत्र में बाँधता है, वह है उनकी सच्चाई और प्रामाणिकता। प्रत्येक कृति रंग, बनावट और रूप के माध्यम से कही गई एक कहानी बन जाती है।

हर चित्र अपने भीतर एक कथा समेटे हुए है। इनमें से कुछ कहानियाँ परिचित हैं—ऐसी कहानियाँ जिन्हें हमने पहले भी सुना है—जबकि कई अब भी अनकही हैं, जो रंगों, संकेतों और मौन की परतों में छिपी हुई हैं। ये सभी मिलकर स्त्री अनुभवों की जटिलता को सामने लाती हैं—साहस, संवेदनशीलता, प्रतिरोध और आशा के अनेक क्षणों के साथ।

जब ये सभी कृतियाँ एक साथ रखी जाती हैं, तो वे भौगोलिक सीमाओं और पीढ़ियों के पार एक संवाद रचती हैं। यहाँ कोई एक ही कथा नहीं है, न ही उठ खड़े होने का कोई एक तरीका। फिर भी, हर साझा कहानी और हर प्रदर्शित कैनवास में एक स्पष्ट संदेश उभरता है—

हम यहाँ हैं।
हम हमेशा से यहाँ रही हैं।
और हम उठती रहेंगी।
