 कोई कलाकार आधुनिक कला का अपना मुहावरा अपनी परंपरागत कलाओं के सानिध्य से गढ़ सकता है, यह देखना हो तो गुलाम मोहम्मद शेख और नीलिमा शेख की कला से देखा जा सकता है। भारतीय लघु चित्रकला और लोक कलाओं की चित्रांकन पद्धतियों के कुछ विशेषताओं को अपनाते हुए दोनों ने जो रचना संसार प्रस्तुत किया है वह पूरी तरह समकालीन और वैचारिक कला है। परंपरा को कैसे विकसित किया जा सकता है, यह भी इन दोनों के काम में देखा जा सकता है। उनके यहां ऐसा बहुत कुछ है जो आज के कलाकारों को सीखना चाहिए। कुछ दूसरे बाद के कलाकारों ने इस दिशा में प्रयास किये हैं, जैसे जगन्नाथ पंडा के यहां ऐसे अनेक चित्र मिलते हैं जिनमें उन्होंने उडीसा की लोक कलाओं की कुछ चीजों का इस्तेमाल करते हुए समकालीन कला को एक नया स्वर दिया। गुलाम मोहम्मद शेख और नीलिमा शेख के कला संसार में निरंतर नवोन्मेष की प्रवृत्ति भी दिखाई देती है, हालांकि उनके यहां नये के नाम पर कुछ भी चौंका देने वाला रचाव नहीं है। वहां रचना में चौंकाने की जगह चेतना का विस्तार प्राथमिक दिखाई देता है।
